BREW Book Excellence Award 2026 Recipients Announced

The Chrysalis Books, Reviews, and Everything Written (BREW) Project has released the list of recipients for the 2026 BREW Book Excellence Award. The award “celebrates books that fascinate and inspire readers, and highlights outstanding achievements across a diverse range of genres, from fiction to nonfiction” as described in the official award guidelines.

The 2026 recipients were selected by the BREW Laureate Council based on criteria relating to content, execution, and reader engagement. The following works have been recognized in categories that reflect their core focus and form:

• Political Fiction: Drinking from the Stream by Richard Scott Sacks
• Dark Fantasy: Fly Stone, Fly by Dust Kunkel
• Narrative Poetry: Armando and Maisie by John Maynard
• Historical Fiction: Nero and Sporus by S.P. Somtow
• Speculative Fiction: More Future Dreams and Nightmares by Donald Firesmith

These works were evaluated for narrative structure, thematic development, engagement with readers, and overall craft in their respective categories.

The BREW Book Excellence Award is part of a broader program of recognitions offered by The Chrysalis BREW Project. 

This year’s recipients represent a range of forms and subjects, from works grounded in historical context to collections exploring possible futures. Each book was selected through a panel review process conducted by subject-matter experts on the BREW Laureate Council.

This round was judged by Jan Harling, Timothy John Green, along with other members of the BREW Laureate Council.
