South Korean National Assembly Votes to Impeach Acting Leader, Han Duck-soo

 King Newswire |  December 28, 2024

South Korea’s opposition-majority National Assembly voted to impeach Acting President Han Duck-soo on Thursday in a historic session, marking yet another dramatic turn in the nation’s political landscape. The vote comes after the earlier impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeon and amid growing political and economic uncertainties.

By 192 majority votes, the assembly resolved to pass the motion. The ruling People Power Party members had boycotted this session of the assembly out of their disagreement with some parts of the proceedings of the assembly. According to the provisions of the constitution, Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok will have to become the interim president right after this decision by the vote.

Political Background and Economic Responses

This amid debates about impeachment as acting leader of the country since the suspension of President Yoon, Han Duck-soo, faces impeachment. Experts claim that the action may trigger economic shocks because the South Korean won plummeted against the US dollar as tensions in the country rose to a political crescendo.

Interim President Choi Sang-mok had appealed to lawmakers to reconsider the motion, warning that the state of the nation’s economy was precarious. “An impeachment motion against the acting authority is effectively an indictment of the entire cabinet,” Choi said in a press briefing, adding that further instability was at stake.

Constitutional Process and Next Steps

Under South Korean law, the Constitutional Court now has 180 days to review the impeachment and determine whether Han Duck-soo will be reinstated or permanently removed from office. Should the court uphold the impeachment, a presidential election must be held within 60 days.

This comes at a very critical time in which the country is faced with pressures of economic hardships, besides increasing political divisions, so people are keenly interested in the Constitutional Court’s proceedings since they will determine the future leadership and governance of the country for years ahead.

Public Response and International Implications

Mixed reactions have been elicited by the impeachment from the public and experts. While some people see it as a step in the right direction toward solving issues of governance, others are worried about its implications on South Korea’s international standing and domestic stability.

Political science professor Jong Hook added that “prolonged political unrest could undermine the progress South Korea has made diplomatically and economically.”.

As the nation waits for the Constitutional Court’s decision, the focus remains on maintaining stability and ensuring that the democratic process continues to function effectively.
